Learning Outcome 4: Be able to critique their own and others’ work by emphasizing global revision early in the writing process and local revision later in the process.
Introduction: The revision process is not just about rewording, it has more meaning to it. When you are reviewing someone’s paper, you want to make sure everything fits and makes sense. Another thing you should be looking for, is if there are easy transitions. The more you review something, you will begin to see the structure behind it. When revising you don’t want to only point out the bad parts you also should point out the strengths of the paper. If there is research in the paper, you want to make sure that it makes sense with the claims that are being made. All of these pieces will make a paper be the best that it can be.
Giving advice to a peer is more than saying change this word and that word. Peer reviewing takes time and patience. In order to revise someones paper to the best of your ability, you may have to read over it multiple times. Have different goals that you want to come out with after each time reading the paper, so you don’t miss any key concepts of the paper. One piece of advice that I gave to a peer about their paper was to keep relating everything back to their original thesis statement. There were places where their writing may have drifted away from the thesis statement, and it is important to keep the thesis statement ongoing throughout the paper. Pages 1-7 below will demonstrate my abilities to peer review someone’s paper.
A great thing about peer reviewing is not only do you give advice on someone’s paper, they also guide you to what your paper should look like. Everyone has different perspectives and different opinions, so it is nice to have multiple people look over your paper. You will get good revision tips from everyone. The way someone thinks may not be the same way that you look at things. One important revision that I got from a peer was that in my narrative I mentioned technology and it wasn’t mentioned again in the persuasive part of the essay. As the writer I did not notice this, cause I was to focused on continuing my writing. I will take this revision advice and go back to see how I can change things around to eliminate technology being a part of the problem.
