Stigma Reflection

Stigma Reflection

I believe that there is so much stigma associated with mental illness due to one’s roots and socially stereotyping others. Mental illness is considered something bad or that people who have mental illnesses are crazy and/or scary, there are many other terms that can be associated with mental illnesses. People may also accuse those who claim to have a mental illness as faking, which I assume would be very hurtful to that person. A person who has a mental illness has enough going on they do not need people accusing them of faking. I think there are many factors that contribute to self-stigma, one being the fact that one may think people are always talking bad about you or the mental illness that you may have. Thinking negatively about yourself will affect your stigma, if you always think you are bad at your job or that someone is better than you, then it will dampen your mood and can cause depression. Mental illnesses can cause fear that you think you are not good enough in things that you do. A person’s culture plays a big role in mental illness, it might be against your cultural practice to have a mental illness or to medically treat a mental illness. Confessing to thinking you may have a mental illness may be stigmatized in certain cultures, this could be due to lack of education about mental illnesses in entirety. Mental illnesses should be taught across all cultures to relieve some of the stigma.
