Simulation Reflection

Simulation Reflection

I believe that the first simulation was a great learning experience for all of us. We learned effective communication with patients that present differently and how to interact with patients who have mental health illnesses. We learned how to effectively work as a team. One major challenge that we were faced with was the flow of our conversation. The first couple of patients in the first simulation, we didn’t guide the conversation in a good manner. It was more of checking questions off of our list rather than having a genuine conversation and getting to know our patient and how they were feeling. After the first couple of patients, our conversations got into a better flow. I learned that the mental health nursing process is to benefit the patient in any way that is possible. It can involve negotiating and settling with something that may not be abstinence, but it might be a better outcome than what they are currently participating in and we have to take that as a benefit. I feel that I am ready to start addressing mental health problems in the clinical setting, but I also learned that there is always room for learning and improvement. Another thing that I think is important is not always pushing a treatment on a patient. Really just get a good feel for the patient and what is going on and don’t constantly push ways of fixing them. Overall simulation was a good experience.
