Prioritizing Emotional Well-Being and Resilience in the Care of Older People

The pandemic was a tough time for all, but I especially feel that it was hard for the elderly population. I feel that since elders were at a higher risk of contracting COVID 19, they may have sheltered themselves more than others in the community. Although this was for their safety, it still gets lonely at times. One elder that I was close to during the pandemic was my grandmother. It was a difficult time because I worked in the healthcare setting and I didn’t want to spread COVID to her, so I didn’t visit her often. But we did things such as phone calls and facetime during the higher depths of coronavirus. Some other activities that my grandmother did during these times were puzzles, crosswords, watching tv, coloring, etc., all of which kept her mind preoccupied and allowed her to avoid thinking about not be able to physically see members of the family or friends. My grandmother was fairly stressed about the situation, even though she didn’t go out in the community much, she made she got all her vaccines as soon as she was able and took as many precautions as possible when she had to go out.

I will use this new knowledge to improve/provide the best care possible to elderly patients. Improving the well-being of elders may improve their quality of life. Elders can improve their own well-being by having meaningful relationships within their life, spiritual wellness, physical exercise, and diet, finding a calling for the chapters within adulthood, positive perceptions, a concept of lifelong learning, the older adults financial well-being, the reality of growing older and what it means to them. Resilience has a lot to do with the elderly patient’s well-being. This changes my perspective on aging, cause the patients resilience can help them bounce back from sickness. The aging process is slowed when the elder is doing well in many of the domains talked about previously. Essentially, an elder must keep themselves “young”. If they think they are old and going to die, it isn’t going to help them. Rather, they should have the mindset of achieving whatever is thrown at them and that they can handle whatever comes next.
