Career Development
1. Reflecting on the NURSES movie:
a. What skills did the nurses exemplify that you need to develop in yourself? Connect to learning in your coursework thus far and how you can build on that learning.
- The nurses in the movie were very compassionate about what they did and the patients that they have cared for. You could tell that it was a calling for them to be in the department that they were in. They were also very empathetic, kind, and loving towards those they cared for. I feel that I have already developed these skills, but they can probably improve with time, experience, etc. If there is anything that I have learnt it is that you can always add to the knowledge you have and build the skills that you encompass.
b. Identify a clinical location or patient population featured in the movie that served a diverse patient population that you have not yet served in your experience as a UNE Student Nurse (think broadly).
- As a UNE student nurse, I am pleased to say that through clinical experiences I have been exposed to many different populations and patients needing different levels of care. A patient population that I have not had the pleasure of working with are oncology patients.
i. What barriers to care are seen?
- One of the barriers that really stuck out to me in the movie was when one of the nurses went to a different country to make a difference. It is crazy to see the extent to the barriers such as lack of access, lack of supplies, caring for patients of less income or no income, lack of resources, etc.
ii. How did the practice of cultural humility help to ready those nurses to care for patients of diverse populations?
- I felt that the nurses conversed well with each other. It is hard to admit in some instances, on what you see, what you hear as one nurse was admitting. Which is why it is so important to talk to your coworkers about what you are going through, they are going to be more helpful because they probably have experienced something similar in their nursing career. Talking about your diverse population with a peer (coworker) can help to broaden everyone’s spectrum and guide you in future care instances.
iii. Are there any areas of your own knowledge where you would want to improve or learn more about caring for diverse populations and creating equity in the care you provide?
- I would like to learn more about caring for all different populations. As the world is changing it is important to keep up on diverse populations, cultures, etc. I hope to provide care that is equitable to each and everyone of my patients.
2. Reflecting on the guest speakers:
b. How will you describe your strengths, supported by evidence (e.g., knowledge and experience gained from the UNE Nursing Program and extracurricular activities, teamwork, communication)?
- The UNE nursing program has brought many strengths to me as a student nurse as well as a person. Over the last four years I feel that I have grown in many aspects of my life. I am so thankful for all of the knowledge that I have gained in my years here. I believe that UNE has set us up to all become great nurses. My communication skills have extremely improved in many ways, whether it’s communicating and working together with peers or conveying information in a professional manner to the faculty. I feel that the clinical experiences that we have had the privilege of having through UNE were and are phenomenal. I can genuinely say that I feel that I have experienced a variety of different populations within the clinicals that I went through and during these, I have learned a lot.
c. How will you describe “weaknesses” (I prefer “challenges”!) and plans/steps taken to address them
- I would say one of my challenges is self care. I spend so much of my time caring for and helping others that I tend to forget about myself. I want to address this by spending more time each day by doing something that I enjoy, or something that is soothing to my soul. Self care is so important as we have learned many times, inorder to care for others you have to spend time caring for yourself as well.
